Canine Osteosarcoma
Study Name:
Expediated Carboplatin for Treatment of Osteosarcoma in Dogs
Purpose of the study:
- To determine if there is a survival benefit when adjuvant chemotherapy is started earlier, specifically the day after limb amputation surgery, in the treatment protocol for dogs having limb osteosarcoma
- To evaluate how limb amputation wounds heal when IV carboplatin chemotherapy is administered
within 24 hours of surgery
Primary Eligibility Criteria:
- Dogs with a bone tumor of the leg that will be undergoing full limb amputation
- Owners intend to pursue carboplatin chemotherapy following amputation
- No evidence of cancer spread
- Pets must come to CSU for all visits related to the clinical trial
Study Protocol:
- Dogs will undergo limb amputation and receive their first dose of carboplatin the day after surgery rather than 2 weeks after amputation (standard protocol)
- Remainder of carboplatin protocol will be completed as per standard treatment
Owner Responsibilities:
- To make and keep all appointments associated with treatment
- Owners are responsible for all costs related to treatment of the pet’s disease including amputation
surgery and chemotherapy
