Combination Palladia and Stereotactic Radiation Therapy for Feline Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Study Name:

Purpose of the study:

To assess the outcome of cats treated with concurrent Palladia and stereotactic radiation therapy (SRT)
To assess blood levels of Palladia in tumor bearing cats and determine if levels reached have anti-tumor activity.

Primary Eligibility Criteria:

Cats with a confirmed diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma involving the mandible, maxilla, tongue, or tonsil; cats with tumors of the salivary glands or nasal cavity are not eligible
Good function of liver and kidneys, acceptable blood cell counts, and free of severe underlying disease
Lymph node metastasis allowed, but distant metastasis is not
Three-week washout from chemotherapy; no prior radiation to the tumor
Pets must come to CSU for all visits related to the clinical trial

Study Protocol:

Prior to treatment, cats will have a CT scan performed for radiation therapy planning as well as a biopsy of the tumor for study purposes
Cats will then begin treatment with Palladia and an anti-inflammatory medication (NSAID or steroid)
After the first dose of Palladia, a small amount of blood will be collected at various time points over 8 hours and analyzed for drug levels. Additional samples will also be collected 24 and 48 hours after the first dose.
One week after starting Palladia, SRT will performed (3 treatments given every other day)
Rechecks 2 & 4 weeks after SRT for sedated oral exam and tumor measurements +/- blood work; repeat CT scan performed 8 weeks post-SRT
Recheck q6 weeks for blood work and sedated oral exams +/- chest X-rays

Owner Responsibilities:

Follow appointment schedule required by study protocol
Costs associated with initial evaluation, periodic blood work, planning CT for SRT, recheck visits, and any other tests recommended by your pet’s oncologist

Financial Incentives:

The study will pay for the costs of tumor biopsy, lymph node evaluation, Palladia, stereotactic radiation therapy, sedated oral exams, and recheck CT scan performed 8 weeks after radiation
