Biography of Investigator:
Midwestern raised and educated. Undergraduate studies and professional Veterinary Medicine degree were completed at the University of Missouri- Columbia. I was in private practice for 4 years on the east coast and later in St Louis before pursuing graduate studies in Veterinary Pathology training. My anatomic pathology training was completed at CSU in a combined program with graduate studies for a Ph.D. Always having an interest in cancer and its effects on the body, my dissertation work was funded by a training grant through NASA on the effects of extended space travel and radiation exposure carcinogenic effects on mammary tissue. I completed my degree and accepted a faculty position at University of IL- Urbana in diagnostic pathology. I returned to CSU to be a member of the Animal Cancer Center when it was just opening it doors. I enjoy the dynamic team approach that takes cancer research from the bench to the patient.

Classes Taught/Currently Teaching:

  • MIP555 Principles and Mechanisms of Disease: cancer pathology
  • R580 Cancer Genetics
  • R581 Cancer Biology
  • VM640 Biology of Disease I: disturbances of growth and cancer
  • VM742 Biology of Disease III
  • PA778 Pathobiology of Laboratory Animals- Hamster & Gerbil
  • PA796V-004 Independent study-Ophtho pathology

Research Focus:
The Molecular Pathology Laboratory at Colorado State University’s Animal Cancer Center has two functions, independent research and pathology support for research projects.

Independent research is driven by  strong interests in oncological pathology with corresponding strong backgrounds in multiple aspects of oncology including cancer proteomics, angiogenesis, carcinogenesis and tumor immunology.  Brad Charles, the laboratory manager has a background in cell and molecular biology with a strong interest in oncology, pathology, and immunology.

The pathology support core seeks to provide a variety of services, advice, and consultation to the Animal Cancer Center and to the whole of Colorado State University.  The services listed below are the heart of what the core offers but the mission of the core also includes supporting the Cancer Center through streamlining of pathology workflow, development of new techniques and pathology troubleshooting.  The core is available for help with any issue and offers the below services as piecemeal or is available to manage projects from necropsy all the way to data analysis.

Core services:

  • Advice and consultation
  • Necropsy, dissection and trimming
  • Sample preparation and submission including decalcification and trimming
  • Immunohistochemistry new protocol development
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Immunofluorescence
  • Western Blot/Dot Blot including quantification
  • Image collection and digital pathology
  • Image analysis
  • Image analysis training and consultation
  • Data collection and interpretation
  • Histopathology

Future Direction:
The Molecular Pathology laboratory is actively completing necessary arrangements to be GLP compliant in sample dissection and processing, histopathology and immunohistochemistry.
