CSU Animal Cancer Center Clinical Trial
Patient Disease: Canine osteosarcoma (bone cancer) of a front leg.
Study Name: Osteosarcoma sentinel lymph node study.
Purpose of the Study: The sentinel lymph node is the first lymph node ("gland") to receive lymphatic drainage from a tumor. It stands "sentinel" over the tumor. The purpose of this study is to investigate a technique to identify the sentinel lymph node in dogs with osteosarcoma of a front leg, using an intra-operative injection of either a special dye or a combination of a radioactive drug and a special dye.
Patient Entry Criteria: In general, these studies are available to qualifying patients living within 100 miles of the Animal Cancer Center at Colorado Sate University. In order to qualify for this study, patients must have been diagnosed with osteosarcoma of a front leg. Patients must be in good health prior to starting this study. Clients must commit to a surgical removal of the tumor as part of the treatment plan.
Owner Responsibilities: The owner is expected to make and keep all appointments according to the study protocol. The owner is financially responsible for costs associated with the diagnosis and staging of the disease (blood tests, X-rays, etc). Additionally, the owner is responsible for costs of surgical treatment in excess of the $200.00 credit described under Financial Incentives.
Financial Incentives: Once enrolled, the costs associated with the sentinel lymph-node biopsy procedure are paid by the study. Additionally, up to $200.00 will be credited to the invoice at the time of surgery. Should your pet require hospitalization due to complications associated with the sentinel lymph-node biopsy procedure, the study will cover these charges.
