CSU Animal Cancer Center Clinical Trial

Patient Disease:
Canine Mast Cell Tumor

Study Name:
AB1010/Masitinib phase 3 trial in canine mast cell tumors

Purpose of the study:

  • To compare efficacy and safety of masatinib to placebo in dogs with grade 2-3 non-resectable mast cell tumors
    • Mastinib is an oral drug that inhibits the function of a group of proteins important for cancer growth called receptor tyrosine kinases

Primary Eligibility Criteria:

  • Dogs diagnosed with grade 2-3, aggressive, non-resectable mast cell tumors
    • Will need to have biopsy of tumor to determine eligibility
  • No prior chemotherapy or radiation treatment for mast cell tumor
  • 3-week washout from steroids
  • Overall healthy otherwise, with no evidence of bone marrow involvement of mast cell tumor

Study Protocol:

  • Dogs will either receive oral masatinib (2/3 of those enrolled) or placebe (1/3 of those enrolled) given daily at home
  • Recheck visits every 2 weeks for physical exam and bloodwork; abdominal ultrasound, chest x-rays and lymph node aspirates done every 4 weeks
  • Dogs are eligible to continue on study until progression of the disease is detected

Owner Responsibilities:

  • Follow appointment schedule required by study protocol
  • Be comfortable administering oral medications
  • Fill out daily treatment and activity log
  • Bring in all medications and owner diary to each appointment

Financial Incentives:

  • Once informed consent is signed, all costs associated with the study are covered by the study
    • Includes costs of screening tests to determine study eligibility
